We kick off our Kiosk Exhibition series with work created by our 5W Community Partner First Exposures.

This summer the students of First Exposures collaborated with 200 Yards for a four-week workshop documenting their new neighborhood. The students took photos and curated an exhibition themselves, along with some help from the 200 Yards staff and First Exposures staff and mentors.

200 Yards, founded by Shelly Kerry and Genevieve Brazelton, is a local photo project focusing on Bay Area neighborhoods 200 yards at a time. They pick a location, map a 200-yard radius around it, and put a call out to photographers to take photos within the circle. Photographers submit their favorite shots and Shelly and Genevieve curate an exhibition to showcase the micro-neighborhood.

First Exposures is part of SF Camerwork which provides support for artists to develop their work, including commissions and awards. First Exposures is the only mentoring program in San Francisco that provides free weekly photography classes for underserved youth, aged 10-18, many of whom have experienced difficult life circumstances and are in the process of stabilizing their lives. First Exposures makes a long-term difference by providing an accessible venue for these students to enhance their self-confidence, develop their creativity, and nurture their passion for learning.
