Position: Managing Director (Intersection for the Arts)
Reports to: Executive Director
Overview
Intersection for the Arts, one of San Francisco’s most vibrant community-based cultural centers, seeks a Managing Director. As Intersection settles into its new home and plays a lead role at the 5M Project, this key leadership position will help guide the organization at the most ambitious and pivotal growth trajectory in its history. This is an opportunity for a strategic leader to help Intersection develop and manage a pioneering collaboration called 5M PlaceWorks.
Working in partnership with the Executive Director, the Managing Director translates short and long-term goals and strategies into the daily life of the organization. The chief areas of oversight include administrative and business operations; financial management; human resources; program, project and production management; communications and development. The Managing Director is responsible for supporting Intersection’s Executive Director in translating complex and growing community partnerships into budget, contracts, and operational plans. On a day-to-day basis, the Managing Director supervises all staff and is responsible for the effective delivery of all Intersection programs and services.
This key position oversees a year-round multi-disciplinary program that aims to bring people together across silos and boundaries to facilitate dialogue and debate and to spark positive community and social change. The Managing Director is charged with harmonizing a team of very talented, high energy, diverse individuals and oversees dynamic visual arts, performance, placemaking, music, and youth art programs.
Background
5M Project
The 5M Project is a creative development in downtown San Francisco designed to catalyze the innovative ideas that build our economy and strengthen our communities. It is a place that utilizes a collective need for innovation to encourage shared resources and ideas across traditional boundaries. Where artists, makers, students, changemakers, entrepreneurs, local food, and technology are coming together day and night. A place designed for people to create.
In the last two years, we’ve been assembling and connecting more than 2,000 creative organizations linked together at 5M through our partners: TechShop, Hub, SoMa Central, SFMade, Intersection for the Arts, Off the Grid and SOCAP, among others. Together, we are transforming an underutilized property into a vibrant place for community and innovation. Over the next ten years, the four-acre site (between 5th, Mission, and Howard Streets) will become a mix of low, mid, and high-rise buildings for living, working, and playing.
5M PlaceWorks
As a direct outgrowth of interest from the communities surrounding 5M, Forest City and Intersection for the Arts are co-creating 5M PlaceWorks – a pioneering organization working to make the innovation-focused resources at 5M into an asset that strengthens our local neighborhoods and creates economic opportunity for disadvantaged communities. PlaceWorks is working to remove barriers and build partnerships between non-profit and for-profit; urban development and community services; social and economic growth. We aim to bridge the collaborative power of more than 2,000 diverse organizations and individuals linked at the 5M Project with the surrounding neighborhoods through two primary levers – PLACEMAKING and ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY.
Position Responsibilities
Administrative and Business Operations
- Establish and maintain effective and efficient administrative systems and operations for all programs, partnerships, and opportunities.
- Working with office and administrative support staff, manage organizational operations including maintaining operating procedures and policies, office supplies, equipment and key vendor relationships.
- Coordinate compliance with business reporting.
- Ensure the maintenance of all organizational files and data.
- Manage risk, evaluate and maintain appropriate policies and insurance (health, liability, directors and officers, etc).
- Approves all contracts.
Human Resources and Staff Management
- Implement creative systems for attracting, nurturing, and retaining the best and brightest staff possible.
- Provide day-to-day oversight to a dynamic and diverse staff.
- Serve as primary supervisor to all director level staff.
- Serve as chief human resources director ensuring full compliance with California labor laws.
- Manage and administer payroll, employee benefits and organizational insurance.
- Maintain employee records.
- Manage comprehensive Performance Management program.
- Lead hiring process, create job descriptions; administer disciplinary process when necessary; maintain up to date personnel manual.
Finance
- Provide day-to-day support, oversight and direction to Finance Director and Finance Assistant.
- Participate in the periodic development of budgets and cash flow forecasts.
- Coordinate annual budget process with Executive Director, Finance Director, and Finance Committee.
Development and Communication
- Partner with Communications Director in to ensure strategic institutional marketing and communications.
- Partner with Development staff and the Executive Director to set and achieve aggressive development goals with a specific focus on increasing membership and individual donations by 150% within 3 years.
- Participate, as needed, in various fundraising activities including individual donor cultivation, special events, and grant writing and reporting.
Information Technology and Facilities Management
- Manage and Plan for all the organization’s information technology needs working with vendors, contractors, and staff.
- Manage the organization’s facilities.
- Manage lease and Lessor relationship.
- Support Executive Director in exploring and negotiating long-term facility solutions.
Programming Leadership
- With Program Team, ensure innovative systems for delivering Intersection’s programs and services.
- Manage operational plan for all programs and ensure efficient delivery.
- When necessary, make final decisions regarding program plans.
- Represent Intersection and its innovative business practices to the larger community at select meetings, conferences, and events.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, work to develop and achieve over-arching organizational goals in line with the strategic plan.
Board and Executive Director Support
- Coordinate regular staff reports and communications to the Board
- Attend and coordinate Board and Board committee meetings when necessary.
Key Characteristics
Strong candidates for this position are energetic leaders with sound management and financial experience, excellent communication skills and clear collaborative capabilities. We are looking for a strategic thinker with extremely strong people and operational management skills.
Candidates will demonstrate a history of success in managing an organization(s) and the ability to inspire and coalesce board, staff and community members. S/he will have the capacity to collaborate with a diverse cross-sector community. Candidates must show the personal maturity needed to exercise effective leadership and the ability to develop a constructive partnership with the Executive Director.
The successful candidate will exhibit energy, dedication, political maturity, ownership, and an eagerness to move the internal operation of Intersection forward.
Compensation
Compensation package includes health and dental benefits; 15 days paid leave, a bonus week at the end of each calendar year, plus holidays and sick time; and significant opportunities for professional development and growth. Salary range is $50,000 to $58,500 FTE.

Title: 5M Project Coordinator (Forest City)
Reports To: 5M Director + 5M Development Director
Overview
The 5M Project Coordinator is responsible for a wide range of communications, collateral design, community engagement, and project management. The position will be very active with strategic development and related operations flows of the 5M Project and 5M PlaceWorks. He/she will manage workflow execution for a broad range of projects, online/offline content creation, collateral generation, and communications, while supporting relationship and program development with community based organizations interested in the 5M Project and 5M PlaceWorks. Position is ideal for an entrepreneurial-thinking individual with deep interest and/or experience with project management, urban planning, graphic design and marketing/ communications. He/she must be passionate about learning how a creative, highly complex development project unfolds, step by step. The position requires a deep commitment to 5M and its overall mission. Work will be conducted at the 5M Project in downtown San Francisco.

We build and operate large-scale mixed-use developments in cities across the United States. Our projects are focused in urban infill locations, often near transit, and always environmentally sustainable. We are a company of entrepreneurs rooted in the goal of building places that understand how we want to live in our cities. Our national projects range from MIT University Park in Boston to MetroTech in Brooklyn to the Uptown in Oakland. In San Francisco, we are building The 5M Project along with Pier 70. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Position will work in tandem with 5M staff and 5M partners to:
• Manage 5MProject.com website, blog, social media, and email marketing
• Create and edit moderate to complex reports as well as other documentation
including presentations, schedules and work plans
• Support graphic design, content creation and marketing collateral generation
• Support management of, and communications with, key partners at 5M Project
and 5M PlaceWorks
• Book/attend all 5M strategy and operations meetings, understand subsequent
workflows, and manage execution/follow-through by team
• Develop online/offline communication and project management tools as needed
• Support creation and execution of wide spectrum of 5M events
• Manage a paid intern (when hired)
• Entrepreneurially seek out and develop greater efficiencies of communication,
project management, and other opportunities that arise
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
• Higher education in business, community development, urban planning,
anthropology, graphic design and/or other related subjects to position description
• Experience with community engagement and working with a diversity of people
• Experience working with highly complex projects, programs, and relationships
• Experience with event creation and production
• Experience with marketing, communications, website management, blogging,
and social media
• Strong ability to write and speak publicly
• Skilled project management offline and online (using online tools)
• Comfortable using MS Office, email marketing solutions, Google Apps,
Eventbrite, Twitter, and Facebook a must
• Performs duties using initiative and independent judgment with little or no
supervision; organizes/coordinates workflow and manages multiple tasks,
projects, and deadlines.
• Ability to design documents in InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator a plus
• Ability to cross boundaries and blend value between for-profit and non-profit
perspectives and resources
• Energetic, ambitious, and flexible with hours and range of duties an absolute
MUST!
• Creative and critical thinker, good communication skills in socially complex work
environments
HOURS
Full Time. Workflows are during normal business hours and some evening hours for
events.
COMPENSATION
• $23-29/hr for 40 hours/week
• Overtime is available
• Full benefits package
• 2 weeks paid vacation
