In a new presentation of our PresentSound Series, Gabi will share her inspiration in creating a new set of works for Del Sol and Chaskinakuy called the Tawantinsuyu Songbook. This collaboration has encouraged her to compose a full, evening length production of music for us in the near future.

“Tawantinsuyu” (in the native Quechua language) means “the four corners of the kingdom” and refers to the entire pre-Columbian empire of the Incas, extending from the Andean Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, the region now comprising the nations of Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Colombia. Drawing on ancient and modern idioms from both the Western and indigenous Latin American musical canons, the “Tawantinsuyu Songbook” creates a true multicultural fusion by welding native Indian performance practices to those of the European classical tradition while preserving the cultural essence of each. In a 3-concert series in 2011-12 Frank’s pieces will be performed by various combinations of Del Sol and Chaskinakuy musicians, using the string quartet instruments and a variety of indigenous instruments—guitars, panpipe and recorder flutes, and various types of drums and percussion.

We invite audience members to join in discussions with the composer and performers as we share some wonderful music, food and drinks together. Del Sol and Chaskinakuy will also perform other pieces from their repertoire.

May 20, 2012 – “Photo/Synthesis” is the latest cross-disciplinary work by visual artist Aline Mare and writer Olivia Sears performing in a kind of “photosynthetic conversation” that intertwines poetry and image, language and visual art, accompanied by the music of local composer Craig Bicknell.

The show premiered in December at the Turtle Bay Museum in Redding CA, as part of the Age of Wonder, Artists Engaged with the Natural World, an exhibit curated by Oakland artist Gary Brewer, on display from October 2011 to January 2012.

HOW TO WRITE FUNNY: A SEMINAR ON HUMOR WRITING.

This lively two-hour seminar will offer insights on the fundamentals of humor writing, and how to approach humor in both fiction and nonfiction. It will also cover the current state of the publishing industry, as well as feature advice from San Francisco literary agent Katherine Boyle , founder of Veritas Literary Agency (www.veritasliterary.com). The evening will be packed with useful information, and maybe even a few laughs as well. Humor is universal, so writers of all levels and genres are encouraged to attend.
